Amy,
Your Mom was always a special person in our family, one who made a big impression on and a big difference for me. She is in some of my earliest memories, when as a teenager in the late fifties and early sixties she visited our houses in Madison and Milwaukee, sometimes babysitting for me. Eleven years older than me, she was close enough in age to be a bridge between the adult world and mine. I remember listening with her to her 45’s when we would visit our grandparents’ house, songs like Runaway and The Lion Sleeps Tonight. I always felt we had a special bond, Joan and I, one formed in the early days of our lives. I remember her warmth, kindness, and ready, quiet laugh. I remember too, especially of the grown-up Joan, her competence and stubborn determination to keep working to get the best out of life. I’m sorry I can’t be with you at the service Monday. But I will be thinking of you and of her.
Michael
