Obituary for Julian Theoplous Sutton Jr.

Julian Theoplous Sutton Jr.
Julian Theoplous “Jay” Sutton Jr., 77 of Houston, Texas passed away unexpectedly, but peacefully on June 2, 2022, with his family by his side.

Jay was born on February 15, 1945, to Dr Julian T. and Anne Sutton. They moved around some while Julian finished medical school and settled down in the little town of Scotland Neck, NC. Jay attended school in Scotland Neck and went on to graduate from Southwood College in 1967. Jay served in the Army National Guard of North Carolina for six years in the Light Weapons Infantry Division where he achieved his Sharpshooter Badge.

Jay was a guy who never met a stranger, he loved telling stories, and had a way of connecting with people. It was fitting that he went on to pursue a career in sales where he spent most of his years selling plastics with USI, Mobil, and Westlake Chemical. His career led him to live in many different places: Louisville, Kansas City, Northern New Jersey, Connecticut, North Carolina and Texas.

In his younger years, Jay had a passion for racing ice boats on Lake Hopatcong, sailing and cruising the Long Island Sound from Milford, CT to Port Jefferson with family and friends. Jay loved a good adventure, as well as the story that he could tell with it. He loved riding his motorcycle all over the country, especially to Luckenbach, Texas which had a special place in his heart.

He was the jokester, the storyteller, the photographer, and the videographer of every party. It was also no secret that Jay also had a love for food and was always in search of the most perfect hot dog. Anyone who met Jay adored him, he was a dedicated family man who was committed to supporting them and their children in any interest they had.

Since marrying Norma in 2009, Jay retired from Westlake Chemical and moved to Houston. His retirement was the beginning of a new adventure, as he traveled extensively with Norma and with great friends, seeing the country and the world on motorcycles, trains, planes, and automobiles. He was a frequent volunteer in church and spent as much time as possible with his grandchildren in Houston and North Richland Hills. Jay definitely “went out living” as he always wanted to do.

Jay is predeceased by his parents, Dr. Julian and Anne Sutton, and his brother Stuart Sutton. He is survived by his brother Michael Sutton; his devoted wife Norma; his children Heather Sullivan, Mandy and Nick Terry, Colby and Anne Blankenship; his grandchildren Matthew, Grayson, Graham, Liam, and Nora; and numerous nieces and nephews.
