Obituary for Charles Richard Hooper III

Charles Richard Hooper III
Charles Richard Hooper III

On Friday, April 9, 2021, at 11:26pm, we lost our hero and biggest supporter to his battle with covid. Charles Richard Hooper III lost his fight after two weeks in the hospital. He entered the hospital on March 23,2021. His room was just eight doors down from his wife Sue Ellen, who was also battling covid.

Richard, as he was known, was born in Port Arthur, Texas, on January 14, 1942 to proud parents, Charles Richard Hooper, Jr. and Wynona Hicks Hooper. His childhood consisted of moving frequently with his parents and baby sister since his father served in the Army. He saw many states as well as Japan and Germany during his youth. Richard graduated from Stuttgart High School in Germany. From there he went back to Port Arthur to stay with his maternal grandparents while attending college. At the age of 20, he decided to leave college and join the service. He enlisted with the Air Force. Upon leaving the Air Force he joined the Reserves and then the Air National Guard. He received his honorable discharge from Ellington Air Force Base on June 19,1984, and was then transferred to the USAF retired reserve list. He went back to college and in 1980 earned a degree in finance from Sam Houston State University. Richard worked for Sears and DHL, retiring in 2013. In retirement he was able to enjoy photography and volunteering with the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo.

He married the love of his life, Sue Ellen Nelson, on December 27, 1968, at the First Methodist Church in downtown Houston. Shortly after getting married they became active in dog shows. They raised and showed Norwegian Elkhounds and Swedish Valhunds.. Once they had their two daughters, they became his world. He did everything he could with them. He joined Girl Scouts when his daughters joined Girl Scouts. He became a band Dad when his daughters went to high school. He loved going to the games with his girls, never missed a game and was a huge part of their lives. He would drop everything to help them should they need it. When his four granddaughters came along he was ecstatic. He enjoyed spending time with all of his granddaughters. They became the joys of his life. He enjoyed teaching all the silliness he could get away with. He will be greatly missed by all his girls.

Services will be held at Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble, Texas. Visitation will be Thursday April 15, 2021, from 4-7pm with services being held on April 16, 2021 at 10am.

Richard is survived by his wife Sue Ellen Hooper of 52 years, 3 months and 13 days, his two daughters, Wynona Beyer and husband Jason, Kimberly Stopyak and husband Joe, his four granddaughters, Bethany, Ainsley, Nora and Charlene. He was preceded in death by his father, Charles Richard Hooper Jr, his mother, Wynona Hicks Hooper and his younger sister, Margaret Joye Hooper.

In lieu of flowers, donations can be made In memory of Richard Hooper to the the Houston Livestock Show and Rodeo Educational Fund, Attn. Jamie Voskamp, PO Box 20070, Houston, TX 77225
