Obituary for Ceaser Moore Sr.

Ceaser Moore Sr.
Mr. Ceaser Moore, Sr. was born to Bob and Ollie Moore on May 29, 1934 in Gause, Texas. He was educated in the Gause school system, later moved to Dallas, Texas where he entered Lincoln High School and then to Houston where he graduated from Phyllis Wheatley High School.

Following graduation, from Wheatly, he entered the U.S. Army. Having served in the U.S. Army during the Korean War, he worked on missiles. Included amongst his awards, was the degree of Apprentice Oozlefinchling by the U.S. Antiaircraft Artillery and Guided Missile Center in Fort Bliss, Texas. The award was given to those who distinguished themselves in the field of artillery. He was a proud veteran. And, he was honored for the service and sacrifice he made on behalf of his country and his family.

Upon his discharge from the Army, he entered barber's college and earned a barber's license. During this same time , he was hired by the U.S. Postal Service. He barbered on weekends, while also working at the Post Office. Always multitasking, he also took advantage of the military's G. I. Bill, and attended Texas Southern University where he earned his Bachelor of Science degree. He went on to earn his Masters degree from the University of Houston, where he was also a doctoral candidate. A life long learner, he went on to complete many continuing education classes. And, he never ended a day without reading multiple newspapers.

He was baptized at an early age. Most recently he was a member of Grace Church of Humble where he served as a greeter, alongside his loving wife, Alice. Prior to that, he attended Bread of Life Church for many years. And, prior to that, he attended the Lakewood Church at it's original location.

Ceaser married Alice Vernell Rogers on January 17, 1960, and they raised two very successful children Ceaser Moore, Jr, Vice Chancellor, UH System and Tammie Y. Moore, an Attorney. Ceaser Jr and Tammie produced his three "sugarplums" (granddaughters). Sugarplum #1 (Nikki), a COO, Sugarplum #2 (Tiffany), a dentist, and Sugarplum #3 (Madison), who is graduating from high school this year and is a professed future doctor. Alice retired as an educator after 44 years of devoted and compassionate teaching. Ceaser was very proud of his family.

After a distinguished career of nearly 40 years, he retired from the U.S. Postal Service on May 3, 1995, where he served in a variety of management roles. Mr. Moore made history in becoming the first Postmaster and the first African American Postmaster in charge of the Humble/Kingwood, Texas Post Office. He was welcomed and well respected in the community by the then Humble Mayor H. E. McKay and a host of other movers and shakers of his time. In fact, Ceaser's distinguished career and work in the community garnered he and his family a place in history, as they are all included in a time capsule buried by Mayor McKay and the Humble Museum.

Mr. Moore also served many years on the Board of Directors of Plus 4 Credit Union (previously the Postal Credit Union) where he made a significant impact in the financial world. He was a great leader. In recognition of his contributions to the credit union movement, the now corporate office sits on land in which the legal description bears his name, along with a placard on the face of the building which also bears his name.

He was a very civic minded individual, serving for many years as President of his homeowners association in Northeast Houston. From Northeast Houston, to Humble, and then finally to Porter, Texas, he forged strong bonds and a lasting impression with neighbors in each of the communities he resided. And, though uncommon, he loved jury service. He was appointed numerous times and also once served on a federal Grand Jury.

He was always someone who desired to give back in some way. He was very philanthropic and donated to a number of causes. The American Heart Association and the American Cancer Society were two of his favorites. He later went on to serve on the Board of Directors of the Northeast Division of the American Heart Association. He served as a Director with the Chamber of Commerce, Northeast Houston Beyond 2000, Precinct Chair and Toastmasters.

Albeit unsuccessful, he also had occasion to run for the school board because education and helping children were two of his passions. So much so that he was appointed to serve as an intermediary/advocate between schools and the community.

He often supported friends and family members in their own endeavors. In fact, he was a good friend of the patriarch (and sons) of Rosewood Funeral Home , the hands in which he has now entrusted his body and final resting place.

He was a member of many organizations, most notably to include Rotary International. He achieved the honor of serving as the first African American President for the Humble Intercontinental Rotary Club. He served Rotary for many years, ultimately resulting in Ceaser and each of his family members achieving the honor of becoming Paul Harris Fellows. The Club's success during his tenure was even recognized by the then Governor.

Mr. Moore was an avid golfer, having played multiple times at over a hundred courses in the Houston and surrounding area, often alongside his son, Ceaser Jr. And, he was often taunted as being a pretty good golfer! He was beloved even on the course, his friends presenting him with a "Retired Gentleman of Wisdom" award upon his retirement. And, a couple lesser known facts, Ceaser and many of his family members also played semi pro baseball. And, Ceaser could swim like a fish! He was a licensed lifeguard.

Mr. Moore was often described as the picture perfect gentleman with a unique sort of swag. Most often wearing a suit, he never uttered a curse word. He neither drank nor smoked. He exemplified how a man is to treat his wife, what a loving father and grandfather is supposed to be like. He served as a role model for all who knew him. He celebrated every single success of each and every family member as if it were the first. The passion, love, as well as the expectations he had for his family was unmatched. He was great and he expected greatness around him.

Mr. Moore's all time favorite idle: Johnny Smith.
Favorite Food: Seafood
Favorite Color: Beige
Favorite Sport: Golf
Past time enjoyment: Reading

In a profile of his life in his home town newspaper many years ago, he ended by saying "God is Good." Indeed, God has been good to Ceaser Moore Sr.

Mr. Moore was preceded in death by his mother Ollie Rebecca Viola Sarah Jane Moore, father - Robert "Bob" Moore, Sr. brothers - Robert "Buddy" Moore, Jr., Charles Moore, and Tony Moore, Sr., and sisters - Ruby "Tally" Moore and Georgia Mae Nelson.

Mr. Moore is survived by his loving wife of 60 years, Alice Vernell Moore, their son Ceaser Moore, Jr. (and wife Linda aka "Kitty") daughter Tammie Moore-Lynch (and husband Sean F. Lynch), his three granddaughters (aka sugarplums) Nikki Moore, Tiffany Moore, and Madison Moore-Lynch. Other survivors include Gary Moore, two brothers - Roy Dean Moore and Ruben Moore, sister Bobbie Nell Moore, and a host of nieces, nephews, cousins and extended family.
