DONALD WAYNE WHITMIRE,
August 9, 1944 – October 3, 2023
Donald Wayne Whitmire passed away on October 3, 2023 at the age of 79, in his hometown of Houston, Texas. His battle with failing health due to prostate cancer in recent years showed his courage in facing life challenges with a smile and never complaining. Despite the troubles, Donald stayed strong until the end and left us peacefully.
Born in Houston, TX on August 9, 1944, he was the second son of the late Joseph Whitmire and Alice Bertrand. He graduated from Sam Houston High School in 1963. In August of 1965 he married Kay Dee Rodgers, and they welcomed two children in their fourteen years of marriage. He then went on to marry Helen Eggleston in 1983, and together, they raised her granddaughter, Jennifer Dewitt Soria.
Most of his working career was spent at Houston Lighting and Power Company, from May 1, 1967 to December 31, 2002, retiring from there after 35 years of commitment and devotion. In his free time and retirement years, he enjoyed repurposing old materials from HL&P, making custom lamps, clocks, and canes. In the most recent years, he thoroughly enjoyed interacting with his great grandkids, forming a very special bond with his first-born great granddaughter, Blake.
Donald is survived by daughter, Kimberly Driver and husband, Steve, son, Donald Whitmire II and wife, Michelle, step-daughter, Alicia Fernandez and step-son Donald Williams. Affectionally know as Pawpaw to five grandchildren, four step-grandchildren, five great grandchildren, sixteen great step-grandchildren and six great great step-grandchildren. He was preceded in death by his wife Helen, his mother and father, and his brother William “Bill” Whitmire.
The visitation and funeral are held at Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 S. Houston Ave., Humble, TX 77396. Visitation will be held Sunday, October 8 from 3-5 p.m. Funeral and burial services will be held Monday, October 9 at 10 a.m. and officiated by Joel Wilson
