Obituary for Columbus "C.J." Joseph Abshire

Columbus "C.J." Joseph Abshire
Columbus Joseph Abshire, known to all of us as C.J., was born on August 21st, 1940 to Gladys Ann Abshire in Crowley, La. His grandmother, who he lovingly referred to as Ma’Ma’, cared for him in his early years. He only spoke Cajun French until he was ready to go to school and was taught English. His mother married Wilson Babineaux, his beloved stepfather, and he became the big brother to Clifford, John, Rita, and Gloria. He grew up in Sulphur, La and attended Sulphur High School where he was as an all-around athlete in football, basketball, and excelled in track and field. He received athletic scholarships to LSU and McNeese State University. He was also invited to compete in the Jr. AAU Olympics as a mile runner, where he was awarded a numerous medals and set new records.

In 1962, he came to Houston and met the love of his life, Patricia Senn while working at the downtown Woolworth’s. A year later they were married, and a year after that they welcomed their first daughter, Trena, into the world. Four years later, the arrival of their second daughter, his baby girl, Traci completed their family. In the 70’s, C.J. moved his family to Humble and this became his hometown. C.J. was well known and respected in his profession as a horse shoer. He made many close friendships during these years. He was a good friend and had a kind and generous heart that he shared with everyone he met.

C.J.’s greatest love was his wife, Pat, and his daughters, Trena and Traci. He graciously gave his daughters everything they ever asked for, sometimes even if they didn’t ask and he never expected anything in return. He also loved rodeo, especially bull riding, and watched it daily on TV. One of his other passions was classic cars of the 50’s. He owned a couple of Chevy’s and even won trophies and awards at car shows with his prize possessions. He was a life-long Dallas Cowboy fan. He loved his Cowboys and loved to talk about them.

As a child, C.J. was a member of the Catholic Church. During the past few years, he has affirmed his faith in Jesus Christ as his savior and enjoyed watching Cowboy Church from his home. His family will miss him dearly, but they know he is at peace and has joined his mother and all of his family that has gone before him into the kingdom of heaven.
