Obituary for
Doug Austin Jr.
DOZIER DOUGLAS AUSTIN, 84, died peacefully in his sleep on July 4, 2013. He was born on February 19, 1929 in Palestine, Texas to Dozier Austin, Sr. and Alyth Brunow Austin and lived in Houston for most of his life.
Doug was preceded in death by his wife of 54 years Lois Keys Austin; daughter Marijo Austin McDonald and survived by his daughters Charlotte Figuiredo & her husband Pete; Carol Truitt and her husband Tim; son Douglas Austin III; brother-in-law James C. Keys and his wife Ethel; six grandchildren; eight great-grandchildren and two great-great grandchildren.
Doug never met a stranger and had many friends. He would always tell us "be careful" when we left, even if it was just to go to the store 5 minutes away, and would say "no use to rush off" even if we stayed with him all day. He loved spending time with friends and family and numerous long-time friends.
Doug was a talented artist who loved to paint and create stained glass artwork, many of which he gave to friends and family. He loved "Open Door" crafts sessions with friends, loved meeting friends for Wednesday "Over 50" dinners and loved playing bridge.
Doug survived over 21 years after quadruple bypass surgery, over 10 years after bladder cancer and survived over 2 years after being in the hospital for over three months. He had congestive heart failure, COPD, kidney issues, lymphoma and a terrific, up-beat attitude that enabled him to survive them all for years and live independently until his passing.
