I always find it disheartening when I get on a crusade to find an old shipmate, friend, co-worker, or mentor and the search comes to a hard stop. I'm alright when my efforts end in failure because it keeps the dream alive, but when the search ultimately resolves on an obituary it makes me sad and disappointed in myself that I didn't do a good job of keeping up with those who played such a big part in my personal and professional life. I have come to realize that I cherish (most of) my compadres and when I discover one has passed it is truly like losing a member of my close family. Today was another of those hard stops.
Another shipmate posted a photo of himself and another at the panels in Maneuvering and it prompted a waltz down memory lane for me and led me to discover that one of my old shipmates from the Willy Maroo had departed our plane a good number of years ago. Gone is MM1 'WILD BILL' Wallace of the Gold Crew M-Division. We had fun while it lasted and I found great humor and enjoyment teaching him to draw so he could be artistic in the series of ERLL (K)NOBBER Books. He applied copious amounts of time and energy while making only minor strides in his pursuit to accurately sketch. His pride was abundant as he made wee bits of progress and both the glee and the graphic results are documented on pages of the many volumes of the covert books.
Here's to you William Clyde 'Wild Bill' Wallace. I'm glad to have shared time and space above and below the surface while we were young and seemingly immortal. Hope to see you on the other side!
