Obituary for Gary P Hart

Gary P Hart
On May 21st, 2023, Gary Porter Hart passed away peacefully surrounded by those that loved him. True to his nature, he wrote the preface to his own obituary several years ago: “Let this notification of death be received with joy and the knowledge that I truly had a wonderful life for which I am truly thankful.”

"I was born, December 13,1933 to Harris Selah and Erselle Porter Hart, I was known as “Bo” to my family. After losing my brother Jack Hart to Polio, I also lost my mother at a young age to tuberculosis. My aunts Blanche Monlezun and Beatrice Thompson served as my mother's after she passed.” Gary went to kindergarten at LSU and spent his childhood years in Beaumont riding around on his motorized bike delivering newspapers followed around by his dog, Mike. As a teenager, he spent summers on his father’s company Sunoco on T2 Tankers as a merchant seaman on the Gulf Coast and Eastern Seaboard, some of which were known to break apart and sink. He traveled the new highways, exploring America with his father. Seeing the Badlands, Mount Rushmore, Yellowstone, and the Southern Part of America. After graduating from Beaumont High School in 1952, he attended college at OU, and Lamar University, eventually graduating from Prairie View A & M. He then went into the Air Force graduating from Air Traffic Control School in 1958. His first daughter, Belinda Kay was born in 1959 while he was at Tyndall Air Force Base in Florida. He was stationed at other posts before retiring from the military in 1962 and continuing into civilian air traffic control. His daughter Katherine Lynn was born in 1967. He was innovative in his time as an air traffic controller. He came up with a system for special traffic for large events like the Super Bowl and other protocols still used today. He was a big part of establishing the new union in the 60s & 70s for air traffic controllers, “PATCO”. His last daughter Elisa Ann was born in 1974. He was a multiple term President of the Houston PATCO ZHU Union Local 403. He also served as negotiator for the Southwest Region during the 1980’s before transferring to be a trainer in Saudi Arabia for ICAO. He then retired from the FAA and started his last career in Real Estate. He soon met and married the love of his life, Oleta. They spent many happy years together with family and friends, volunteering and attending church. Gary had a love for Scuba Diving including in the Red Sea, and fishing. He also competed in motorcycle racing, and marathons including Houston and Boston Marathons, and a relay for Charity with PATCO from Dallas to Houston, where he ran 2 segments when someone else did not show up. He later took up mountain biking, always being faster than his grandchildren, who always have memories of eating and living adventurously. He had a particular love for sardines and anchovy paste on his pizza, sushi, pho, shawarma and he had never tried before, he had us try with him. Gary was a wonderful father, grandfather, great-grandfather, and great-great grandfather. We learned compassion, Love, Forgiveness, Integrity, Loyalty, Love of Animals, Strength, and to not fear doing what was new, or right, with determination to push through no matter what to succeed. We all miss him but carry this all on within us.

Gary was preceded in death by his wife, Oleta Hart, his mother, Erselle Porter Hart, his father Harris Selah Hart, and brother Jack Hart. Aunts Blanche Monlezun, Beatrice Thompson, as well as numerous aunts and uncles. Daughter Belinda Kay Hart Rachell, Grandson in law Tommy Chesser and Granddaughter in law Emily Crixell.

Gary is survived by daughter, Katherine Hart, her children Cynthia Brett and Enda Brett and their daughter on the way. Joshua Halatyn, Daniel Halatyn and David Halatyn; grandson Michael Sigman, his son Julian Crixell, Granddaughter Kristel Chesser, and her children Joseph Aguilar and his fiance Autumn, Christopher Aguilar, Haden Chesser, and Kaitlyn Chesser, and Kristels, Grandchildren Marley Grey, JennaLynn Parker, and Alijah Aguilar; stepdaughters, Kathy Fisher and Patty Faulk, and her children Misty Downey and Don, children Mazie, and Violet, Derrick Faulk, and his son Cannon; stepdaughter Lisa Sorrell, daughter Elisa Mahone, her husband, Tom, and her daughters, Camryn, Rylan, and Finnley.
