Obituary for Doris F Pooley (Fanchier)

Doris F  Pooley (Fanchier)
Doris was born on the Roberts Ranch – west of Driscoll, Tx, the youngest of 7 children, and lived there until she was 5 years old. At that time the family moved to Driscoll, where she attended school. She graduated salutatorian from Robstown High School in 1941. She attended Mary Hardin-Baylor College in Belton, Tx for the 1941-1942 school year.

Doris then moved to Corpus Christi, Tx and worked at Guaranty Title & Trust Co. from 1942-1945. She then served as church secretary at Calvary Baptist Church until 1948.

In the fall of 1948, she enrolled in Baylor University where she earned a B.A. degree in 1951 with majors in Bible and Sociology. While at Baylor, Doris worked as Education Secretary at First Baptist Church in Waco, and then as secretary for Dean Carroll at Baylor. After graduation, she worked as a secretary at Calvary Baptist Church in Corpus Christi and First Baptist Church in Texas City.

January 1956 began a new chapter in her life. She began work in Portland, Oregon with the Baptist General Convention of Oregon-Washington now known as the Northwest Baptist Convention. Doris worked in the departments of Missions, Stewardship, Evangelism and Woman’s Missionary Union and participated in Young Women’s Auxiliary Conferences and Girls Auxiliary Camps. In addition, she worked in local churches with the youth, in Sunday School and Missionary Organizations, sang in the choir and served on numerous committees.

During this time, she attended Portland State University to qualify to teach in Oregon public schools in the field of Business Education. Her first teaching position was at the High School in Cascade Locks, Oregon from 1962-1963. From 1963-1986 she taught at Madison High School from which she retired on January 1, 1986.

In June of 1986 Doris married Howard R. Pooley of Downey, California, whom she had first met when he was her school principal / superintendent in Driscoll, TX from 1934-1939. They renewed their acquaintance at a Driscoll school reunion in 1982. They moved to their new home in Atascocita, Texas in December of 1987 and were members of First Baptist Church – Humble.

Doris Pooley was preceded in death by her parents; John Whitley Fanchier and Electa Elizabeth Fanchier, brothers Millard Eugene Fanchier, Thomas Calvin Fanchier; sisters; Della Mae Fanchier, Eva Mary Butler, Gladys Lorraine Godfrey and Lois Rogers, nephews; Millard Calvin Fanchier, Billie Gene Godfrey, Clyde Whitley Fanchier, Odie Dell Butler and niece Carolyn Anne (Butler) Cummings. She was also preceded in death by her husband Howard R. Pooley and step-son Ross Pooley.

She is survived by nieces and nephews; Harold Godfrey (Anne), Francis Wylie, Jimmie Butler (Debby), Glenn Rogers (Buttons), Beth Cole (Willard), Vicky Keeney (Robert).

She is survived by her step-children; Steve Kroll (Judy), and Jayme Teunissen, Grandchildren; Reggie Pooley (Mimi), Dee Everett (Steve), Dawn Habbena, Michael Kroll (Mary Jane), Kim Anderson, Kevin Kroll (Vanessa), Matthew Kroll (Katie), Melanie Shelabarger (Chad), Devon Williams, Kim Dahmer (Brett).

She is survived by 11 great-grandchildren and several great, great-grandchildren. And many, many friends.
The family would like to express their thanks and appreciation to long-time caregiver and good friend Deanne Lentini. Doris will be remembered for Christian faith, her kind heart, generous hugs and beautiful spirit.
