Obituary for Jon Rogers Winfield

Jon Rogers Winfield
Born on September 11, 1942, in Terrell, Texas, Jon Rogers Winfield passed from this life on December 1, 2020. Jon grew up in San Augustine, Texas—the third oldest of ten kids. He excelled in football and baseball, earning a baseball scholarship to Panola Junior College. He later transferred to Centenary College where he was an exemplary first baseman, hitting over .400 his senior season. He still ranks in the top ten in school history. It was while at Centenary that Jon met the love of his life—Gail Golden Winfield. After a short courtship, Jon and Gail married on November 21, 1964, in Stanley, Louisiana.

Jon began a 40 year career as a teacher and coach in New London ISD. He later had stops at Barbers Hill ISD and Aldine McArthur High School. He finished the final 22 years of his career at Humble High School. Known for his wit and one liners, Jon positively influenced numerous students, athletes and fellow coaches. His strong work ethic and dependability were evident to all who knew him. Even after retirement Jon continued as a substitute teacher, and he was nominated for teacher of the year at Kingwood Park HS.

Jon was a faithful member of The Woodlands Church of Christ. He was loved and respected by many as a neighbor and a friend. He loved God, his wife and sons, nieces and nephews and brothers and sisters. He especially loved his grandchildren. Grandad, as he was known, was full of wisdom and advice. He never met a stranger and loved to tell a story. He would help anyone, and was a caretaker of friends and family. Jon could fix anything, and he would mow your yard or help in anyway without ever being asked.

Jon was preceded in death by his father, “Lefty” Joe Winfield; mother, Nell Maxine Shamberger Winfield; and brother, William “Bud” Winfield. He is survived by his wife of 56 years Gail Winfield; son, Darrell and wife Cheryl Winfield; son, Brad Winfield; son, Kevin and wife Lisa Winfield; son, Brian and wife Amanda Winfield. He is also survived by his eight grandchildren: Brooks Winfield, Blaine Winfield, Tyler Winfield, Jordan Marsh, Patrick Winfield, Lauren Winfield, Justin Winfield and Payton Winfield; and three great-grandchildren: Jackson & Grayson Marsh and Dax Winfield. Jon’s sisters, Carol Lipe, Linda Chance and Sharon Winfield; and brothers, Charles Winfield, Max Winfield, Robert Winfield, Joe Winfield, Steve Winfield and Jerry Winfield also survive him. He has numerous nieces and nephews.

Services will be for immediate family only and will be live streamed by Rosewood Funeral Home at www.rosewood.cc at 9:30 am on Friday December 4, 2020. Burial will take place in Stanley, Louisiana at Mt. Olivet cemetery located at 14320 US-84 Logansport, LA 71409 on Saturday, December 5, 2020 at 1 pm.
