Obituary for Flora Almeida Butler

Flora Almeida  Butler
“Behold, God is my salvation;
I will trust, and will not be afraid;
for the Lord God is my strength and my song,
and he has become my salvation.”
Isaiah 12:2

Flora (Almeida) Butler “Memaw” passed peacefully from this life on Saturday June 27th, 2020 at the age of 97 due to natural causes. She is now chatting with the angels in Heaven. She was born on the Island of Maui, Hawaii on September 17th, 1922 to Manuel Almeida and Ludvina (Petro) Almeida who both precede her in death. She is also preceded in death by her husband, Hugh Grason Butler in 1989. She is one of six children. Hawaii is where she met her husband, Hugh Butler as he was stationed at Pearl Harbor in the US Navy at the time. The day of the Attack on Pearl Harbor she was at work at a pineapple cannery on the island. They moved to Texas and purchased their lifelong home in the late 1940’s in the Songwood subdivision in Houston, TX. She was very involved in her subdivision and her Methodist church. Flora was an excellent homemaker to her husband and 2 sons. After her sons married and started their own families, they purchased a lake house on Lake Livingston where they built many wonderful memories earning the name of Memaw and her husband, Paps. They enjoyed 3 wheelers, skiing and fishing at the lake. She would often tell fun lake stories including but not limited to the never-ending 3 wheelers repairs. When Hugh passed in 1989 and she leaned on her family and friends to pull through. She devoted even more time to her church and community. Her family began to grow as did her love for her great grandchildren as well. Flora had many favorites things with gardening and sports being at the top of the list. She loved watching sports and faithfully watched local Houston sports teams with enthusiasm. She was always up to date on current events and enjoyed a good conversation. She was a wealth of knowledge and always educated people on vitamins or natural herbs to help with certain ailments. She loved her dogs and often watched her friend’s animals if they had to travel. She had many friends that would stop by to have coffee and visit. The VFW, Houston Humane Society, SPCA are just a few of the charities that Flora donated to on a regular basis. Flora loved her family more than anything and she will be greatly missed.
Funeral Services will be graveside on Thursday, July 2nd, 2020 at Rosewood Memorial Park, Humble, Texas. Graveside services will begin at 10:00 am with Kevin LeVrier officiating.
