Obituary for
Shirley Janice Westhoff (Goad)
Shirley Janice Goad Westhoff, 62, of Porter, Texas left the bonds of this earth to be with the Lord on May 9, 2020. Shirley was born in San Benito, Texas to Waite and Lois Goad on December 25, 1957. She was raised in San Benito and graduated from San Benito High School. She grew up a farm girl and was involved in Future Farmers of America, Student Council, Keywanettes, and Future Homemakers of America and was a member of Mu Alpha Theta. Her early life was centered around farming and plants.
Though she never completed a college degree, Shirley attended several colleges and throughout her life was a staunch advocate of education. She attended Texas A & I University 1977-1978 studying Agricultural Economics, and she continued this study at Sul Ross State University in 1978. She continued her education at Tarrant County Jr. College 1984 and again at Kingwood College 2007, turning her career from agriculture into teaching because of her children.
Shirley moved to Fort Worth, TX in 1983, where she met her husband, Roger. They were married in 1984. She left her career in agriculture in 1988 to stay home and raise her children. She and her family moved to Houston, TX in 1991, where she lived out the rest of her life. She was very involved in her children’s lives; as they grew older, she began volunteering at Matthew’s elementary school, which led to a full-time position and culminated in a fulfilling 18-year career in education with New Caney ISD. Outside of work, Shirley was a wonderful homemaker, a talented cook, an avid gardener, and a crafty seamstress. She was enthusiastic about reading and enjoyed participating in her book club. Later in their lives, Shirley and Roger enjoyed traveling around the country, whether it be tent camping, road trips, or excursions in their travel trailer. It was Shirley’s unfulfilled desire to relax in retirement with Roger at “The Savannah” near Fairfield, TX.
Religion was an important aspect of Shirley’s life. She was confirmed into the Catholic Church as an adult, and she was strong in her beliefs. In addition to the substantial amount of love and support she received from her family and friends, she also credited her faith in God as a source of strength as she endured the difficult treatments in her hard-fought battle against ovarian cancer.
Shirley is survived by her husband Roger Westhoff of Porter, Texas; her brothers and sisters, Gerald (Linda) Goad of San Benito, Texas, Marilyn Smith of Spring Creek, Nevada, Chester Goad of Round Rock, Texas, Barbara Jackson of San Antonio, Texas, Norman (Anne) Goad of Houston, Texas, and William (Sherilyn) Goad of San Benito, Texas; her children, Katherine Westhoff (Craig) Larner of Houston, Texas and Matthew Westhoff of Conroe, Texas; and her grandchildren, Olivia Larner and Cassandra Larner of Houston, Texas.
Shirley was preceded in death by her parents, Waite and Lois Goad; her brother-in-law, Robert Jackson; her sister-in-law, Marlene Goad; and her nephew, Richard Dale Westhoff.
A memorial service will be held on Monday, May 18, 2020 at 2 pm at Rosewood Funeral Home in New Caney, TX. A livestream will be offered for those who cannot attend.
