Obituary for
Charlotte Ann Mundee (Dunlap)
Charlotte Ann Dunlap Speake Mundee passed away peacefully of natural causes on Monday,
May 4, 2020, at Bridgecrest Rehabilitation Suites. Her daughter Tess was by her side. She was
born on February 11, 1942, in Hattiesburg, Mississippi, at Forrest General Hospital. Her parents
were James Neville Dunlap and Marguerite Ann Easterling Dunlap. She was a1959 graduate of
Hattiesburg High School.
Charlotte married Robert Speake in 1959; in 1960 they welcomed their first child, Robert Jr.. In
1964, Tesslyn was born, and in 1968 Kelly was born. Charlotte spent her early adult years
raising her family, and traveling as a military spouse to Germany, and to several U.S. bases.
Charlotte married Richard Mundee Jr. in 1983. She worked as a financial planner for VALIC
until she retired after twenty years. During that time she demonstrated her compassion and
determination helping people create the best retirement they could. She was especially
respected at the Houston Grand Opera and Houston Ballet for her kindness and concern for the
staff and performers.
Charlotte lived life to the fullest- supporting her family with many celebrations, birthdays,
Thanksgiving meals, Easter egg dying parties, swim parties,Christmases, and so much
wonderful food, she lovingly prepared. Family fondly recalls lemon icebox pies, pound cakes,
gumbo, 2 inch thick ribeye steaks, Dunlap potato salad, Waldorf salad, the list is endless. She
was well loved for her compassion and devotion to her family and friends.
Charlotte is survived by her spouses, her brother Bill, her three children, grandchildren Lindsay
Speake and Allison Speake Sonnenberg (Zachary), Katy Mustain Mercado (Luis), and Sara
Mustain, and Luke (Chasity), Jack (Taylor), and Mallory Hickman, and two great-grandchildren
Bryce and Raegan Hickman.
In the midst of COVID, Charlotte’s service will be postponed to later this summer in Mississippi.
