Obituary for
Velma Napier Pair (Lott)
Velma Ree (Lott) Pair, age 85, of Plantersville, Texas passed peacefully on April 13, 2020 after complications from Alzheimer’s disease. She was born in Collins, Mississippi on February 20th, 1935. Known to many as “Bunchie,” a nickname her father gave her as a child.
She is preceded in death by her husband, Vernon, daughter, Elena, parents, Rance Walker Lott, Sr. and Tamer (McKenzie) Lott, sisters, Margie and Shelby, and brothers Voyd and Rance Jr.
She is survived by her son, David, daughter, Shirley, numerous grandchildren and great-grandchildren, sister, May, and brother, Lawrence.
She first married at the age 16 to Lee Nolan Napier, the father of her three children. She married again in 1997 to Vernon and enjoyed 22 years of marriage until his passing in 2019. Vernon, a postman for 30-plus years met her on his mail-route – an extremely private person, he never held back in expressing his love for her. In retirement, they settled in Plantersville, Texas, where they built a home together and enjoyed the peaceful country life tending to their gardens and keeping chickens, ducks and numerous other fowl. Forever the romantic, red roses were her favorite flower and to her last breath, she shared how Vernon was the love of her life.
Raised in rural Mississippi, she remained humble and grateful throughout her lifetime for the simplest joys – fresh flowers, sweets, and family time. Her cooking will be greatly missed - her fried chicken, potato-salad, and banana pudding were legendary! She loved nothing more than being surrounded by her family enjoying a meal she prepared.
With only an elementary-level education her wit and good-humor served her well as she navigated life in the Houston metropolitan area for the majority of her adulthood. She is well-known for her deep sense of compassion and selflessness; she always remained devoted to her family. However, her sense of independence may have been her greatest legacy, especially to her three granddaughters.
The greatest example of her love was embodied by her granddaughter, Ashely Rodriguez, who cared for her with the greatest compassion and tenderness in her last days. Ashley painted her nails, took her on shopping sprees at the Dollar Store and made numerous fried-chicken runs to keep her spirits high as the dementia progressed.
Velma will be interred at Rosewood Cemetery in Humble, TX alongside Vernon surrounded by immediate family. A celebration of her life will be held at a later date due to COVID-19 restrictions.
Heart-felt appreciation is extended to Traditions Hospice and Ashley Rodriguez for ensuring the end of her life was loving, comfortable, and dignified.
In lieu of flowers the family has asked for donations to the Velma Ree Memorial Fund to assist in meeting the end of life expenses. You can make your donation through the velmareememorialfund@gmail.com paypal.com account.
