Obituary for
Gene Eldon Shine
Gene E. Shine, age 71, passed away peacefully on Sunday, January 19, 2020, at Houston Methodist Hospital. He was surrounded by family after struggling with lung transplant rejection and pneumonia. Gene was born on April 26, 1948, in Houston, Texas to WWII veteran, Eugene A. Shine and his wife, Helen L. Carney Shine. They raised Gene with their other children Clara, Margaret, Donald, and Ramona. Growing up in Sheldon, located in northeast Houston, Gene dedicated his life to his Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. He graduated from the University of Houston in 1971 with a Bachelor of Science degree. He obtained his Master of Education degree from Sam Houston State University in 1979 preceding a certification as a professional counselor in 1980. Gene married his beloved wife, Gloria G. Couch Shine, on May 27, 1972, whom he adored and served with faithfully for more than 47 years. They raised their 3 children, Tiffany, Angela, and Paul.
Gene taught at C.E. King High School in Sheldon ISD for 31 years. He headed the Science Department for 30 of those years and then retired in 2002. During his early professional years, he also taught part-time at San Jacinto College North in the Science Department. When he wasn’t teaching at school, he was preparing Bible study lessons for youth, young adults, or older adults in church. He served faithfully as a deacon and teacher at Houmont Park Baptist Church, Parkway Baptist Church, and Northeast Houston Baptist Church through most of his life.
He enjoyed nature, hunting, fishing, sports, and working outdoors. Gene coached baseball and tennis, took his family and friends on fishing trips out in the bay, and prayed to God for hours in the deer stand. But most importantly, Gene lived a Matthew 4:19 life. “Follow me, and I will make you fishers of men.”
Gene was proceeded in death by his parents Eugene A. Shine and Helen L. Shine.
Gene Shine was a Christian, a beloved husband, father, brother, uncle, deacon, coach, teacher, and servant. He is survived by his wife, Gloria G. Couch Shine of Houston, Texas, daughters Tiffany A. Kennerly of Kingwood, Texas, and Angela J. Van of Copperas Cove, Texas, son Paul R. Shine of Houston, Texas, son-in-laws Curry Kennerly and Nick Van, grandchildren Victoria, Rachel, Samuel, and Sarah Kennerly, Janette and Haylee Van, and Hunter Shine, siblings Clara Thate of Grand Prairie, Texas, Margie Shine-Waters of Navasota, Texas, Donald Shine of Houston, Texas, and Ramona Cravey of Manvel, Texas, and their families.
Gene had many trophies, awards, and accomplishments of which he could be proud, but those which he cherished the most were the people in his life. He loved all those he encountered and lived to passionately make a difference every day. “Only one life will soon be past… only the things done for Christ will last.”
