Obituary for Frederick Melancon Jr.

Frederick Melancon, Jr. known as "Big Fred", was born on March 1, 1929 in Port Barre, Louisiana. He was the eldest son amongst a family of nine children.

In 1946, he joined the Army. Two years later he switched enlistment to the Air Force, completing a total of 30 years of honorable service with many commendations. He met his beautiful wife Kyoko during one of his early tours of duty in Japan, where six of his eight children were born. In 1974, he retired from the military and moved his family to Houston, working for GB Biosciences for 17 years as a plant operator.

Frederick loved discussing political issues with anyone who would listen. He was happiest when he was surrounded by his family, most notably his grandchildren. He impressed upon his children and grandchildren to always take care of each other, work diligently and be respectful.

He is preceded in death by his parents Augustine Brown Melancon and Frederick Melancon, Sr., his daughter, Joanne (Monicas twin), and his sisters and brothers, Gertrude, Lucille, Josephine, James, Lionel, Herschel, and Doris.

He is survived by his wife Kyoko of 72 years, his children Marie (John), Gerald (Dualise), Monica, Frederick III (Elizabeth), Myra (Winfield), Marcia, and Marguerita (Kevin). He is also survived by his sister Dorothy, 12 grandchildren, 17 great grandchildren and one great-great grandchild as well as a host of cousins, nieces and nephews.

He lived a blessed life of 90 years.
