Obituary for Harvey Lee Trigg

Harvey Lee Trigg
Harvey Trigg loved life. But his robust life on earth was cut short by diabetes after only 73 years, and he went to be with the Lord in the presence of his beloved family on Sunday, September 29, 2019.

Harvey Lee was born November 12, 1945 to Evelyn Mae Mikus and Wilborn Lee Trigg, both deceased, at the Heights Hospital. He had a younger brother, Randy Trigg, also deceased. He was proud to call himself a native Texan and Houstonian and also a proud resident of Humble, Texas. Even as a child, Harvey was interested in all things, always on the go, and ready for adventure. He was a fighter and never backed down from a challenge. He attended St. Thomas High School, where he was a member of the Eagle Guard, was fascinated by the priesthood, and became an active alumnus. He attended the University of St. Thomas where he had his sights set on studying to join the Basilian Fathers Congregation of Priests. He eventually chose a different devotion, and joined the Houston Police Academy in December 1967. He served the public with pride, integrity, and guts for 22 years. During this time, he married MaryAnne Ayo, and became a father to his son Tracey Lee Trigg, and his daughter, Valerie Anne Trigg Copley.

After 22 years with HPD, Harvey took his retirement and set out to fulfill his lifelong dream of cooking and feeding people full-time after years of catering for church bazaars and fundraisers as a hobby. He was inspired by his father who was in the wholesale meat business with customers all over southeast Texas. He began this new chapter of his life with his wife Mary Wagenfuehr at his side. In 1989, they ventured out and opened Harvey Trigg Gourmet Barbecue Catering with the support of his uncles, Eugene and James Trigg. As a growing success, soon he pursued another dream of opening a restaurant, and in 1993, Trigg’s Café opened in Humble, Texas. Harvey loved being in the restaurant every day of the week, and he thrived on the relationships created around the tables there. He poured his heart and soul into every meal that was served, and he was delighted to walk the restaurant and pass out hot biscuits, what we called “Biscuit Patrol”. Soon he was approached to take over Humble Inn, Humble’s oldest restaurant, and he was honored to take the helm along with Mary, Tracey, and Valerie in 1998. Around this time, he also gained a son-in-law, Joby Copley, who was studying architecture at the time, but was always willing to sample Harv’s culinary creations for “quality control”.

Always with a huge heart for service, and usually behind the scenes, he donated many meals and anything else he could to those in need. Harvey loved people; he never met a stranger. He also loved animals. Somehow the strays always knew how to find him, and he was more than happy to take them in. That love of animals came from his dad, and it lives on in his children and in his only grandchild, Louie Michael Copley. Louie will tell you a few things about his Papaw: “He loves animals, he was the boss, and he makes the best green beans in the world.”

Harvey was a proud, native Texan, and he used to tell his kids that there was no need to travel elsewhere because “Texas has it all”, until his brother Randy introduced him to New Orleans, and he fell in love. The vibrant atmosphere alive with food, music, and color suited his larger than life personality, and he was hooked, always looking forward to planning his next trip with family and friends.

Harvey made so many friends, always smiling and joking around as he greeted all of his customers. No one was a stranger, and he wanted everyone to feel welcome. Many family holidays were spent with customers and friends all around the table. He gained an “adopted son” in Wallace Middleton, a restaurant fixture and Humble Police Officer, and he became part of the family. Another great friend was Humble Fire Marshal Clint Johnson. Although he was a policeman, Harvey was infatuated with the world of antique fire trucks introduced by Clint. Surely they are starting a new fire truck club right about now in heaven.

Harvey was a proud member of the Rotary Club of Humble, the Knights of Columbus, SPAAMFAA Gulf Coast Chapter, Houston Police Retired Officers’ Association, North Harris County Criminal Justice Association, Harris County Sheriff’s Department Academy Advisory Board, Founding Member of Humble ISD Education Foundation, Lake Houston Area Chamber of Commerce, and he received numerous awards and accolades throughout his life and career. One of his most cherished recognitions was the Chamber’s Haden E. McKay Citizen of the Year Award in 1999.

It was a very sad time when his health caused him to eventually close the doors to his living dream. He was a true fighter until the inevitable end, and we’d like to extend a special thank you to Ricardo Bonilla who was a constant with us in the end to offer support and care.

Many will remember him with a kind and giving heart, a big smile, and maybe with an inappropriate joke or story. And some will remember him as being tough, determined, and hard-headed. He was all of these things. He was a rock. He was a fighter. He did things his way and unapologetically. He was definitely larger than life, and one of a kind, and we will not be the same without him.

In lieu of flowers, please consider making a donation to the Harvey Trigg Memorial Law Enforcement Scholarship Fund established by the Rotary Club of Humble to help carry on Harv’s legacy in the law enforcement community.
