Obituary for Billie Winifred Beckers (Goodroe)

Billie Winifred Beckers (Goodroe)
Billie W. Goodroe Beckers was born the youngest of five children to Lloyd and Essie Goodroe, on November 6, 1928, in Huntsville, Texas. After graduating from Wharton High School, she married Norman L. Beckers on December 25, 1947, at Redeemer Lutheran Church in Houston, Texas.

Billie and Norman made a home in Houston, where they raised five children: Michael, Gretchen, Teresa, Eric, and Erin. In the mid 1960’s Norman’s firm transferred him to Ohio, where Billie helped her big family adjust and embrace new adventures.

Billie was a wonderful cook who explored new tastes and prepared fresh vegetables grown in her own garden. She was also a skilled seamstress and quilter, and a prolific reader—instilling in her children and grandchildren a great appreciation for literature, art and handcrafts. Most of all, Billie loved all things of the natural world, with special interests in plants, birds, and pets. She shared those passions with everyone and showed us how to observe and appreciate God’s world.

After the death of her husband in 1987, Billie continued to live in their family home in Humble, Texas, until 1996, when she relocated to be near her children. Billie lived her later years in Brenham, Texas, where she was a member of Christ Lutheran Church and an active volunteer at Unity Theatre.

Billie spent her final days at the Accel Nursing Facility in College Station, where she made new friends with special caregivers. In the care of Hospice and surrounded by family, she passed away on Sunday, August 18, 2019.

Billie is survived by her son, Michael L. Beckers of San Francisco, California, daughter Gretchen L. Jones of Brenham, Texas, daughter and son-in-law Teresa and Steve James of Brenham, Texas, son and daughter-in-law Eric and Lori Beckers of Buda, Texas, daughter and son-in-law Erin and William Briggs of Dallas, Texas. Her five grandchildren are Kirby Jones, Ashley Jones Lonsert, Elliot Briggs, Harris Briggs, and Walter Briggs. Her six great-grandchildren are Marley, Davis, and Norman Lonsert, Anne and Simon Briggs, and Penelope Briggs. She also leaves a large and loving extended family who held her dear as a special matriarch of their family.

Funeral Arrangements for Billie Beckers have been entrusted to Rosewood Funeral Home. Billie will be laid to rest next to her husband, Norman, at the Rosewood Cemetery in Humble, Texas. There will be a graveside service at 11:00 am on Friday, August 23, 2019.

Memorials may be directed to Lady Bird Johnson Wildflower Center, 4801 La Crosse Ave., Austin TX 78739 (www.wildflower.org/donate), or the charity of your choice.
