Obituary for Martha Lee Sutton (Wood)

On Friday, June 21, 2019, Martha Wood Sutton, loving mother, grandmother and great-grandmother, passed away peacefully at the age of 86.

Martha was born on March 28, 1933, to Alfred Wood and Gladys Smith. As the eldest daughter, Martha took great pleasure in helping to care for her older brother Jack, and younger sisters, Patty, Betty, Donna and Delores. She married Mervin Robert Sutton on July 6, 1949, and was married for 60 years until Bob’s death in November, 2009. Together they raised two sons, Robert and Ronnie.

Martha’s exceptional dedication to her husband and family never wavered. She was a devoted mother and loved nothing more than doting on her sons, grandchildren and great-grandchildren. She also cherished her relationships with her mother, brother and sisters, as well as her extended relatives. Martha’s family was the center of her life.

Martha was a member of the New Hope Baptist Church congregation for over 35 years. Her faith guided everything she did. She will be remembered as a servant of God and an invaluable member of her church community.

Martha loved caregiving above all else. She was forever preparing meals for her sons and grandchildren, making cookies for the children at church and in her neighborhood and feeding stray dogs and cats. To Martha, every creature in God’s creation was worthy of nurturing. Her loyalty and love for Bob throughout their marriage, and particularly during his last months of life, made an indelible impression on everyone. We are honored to carry on in her memory.

A Funeral Service will be held on Monday, July 1 at 10:00 am at Rosewood Funeral Home in Porter, TX. A funeral procession will immediately follow with a Graveside Service to be held at Brookside Memorial Park in Houston, TX.
