Obituary for Barbara Gwinulen Hill (Green)

Barbara Gwinulen Hill (Green)
Barbara Gwinulen “Gwendolyn, Gwen” Hill passed peacefully March 11, 2019 at the age of 81, when called home by her savior, Lord Jesus Christ. Gwen passed during a brief stay at Hermann Memorial Hospital in Humble, Texas with family loved ones by her side and on the phone.

Born: Gwen was born November 18, 1937 to Perry McKinley Green (farmer) and Della R. A. Woods (homemaker) in Marthaville, Louisiana. Gwen was the youngest of Perry and Della’s eight children. Siblings who preceded Gwen in death include sisters, Gladys Booker, Cloedell Greer, Verona Brown, and Perry Lee McElwee; brothers, E.F. Green and Gale Green. Sister, Mavis “Tassie” Currie, survives Gwen as the last living child of Perry and Della Green. “Aunt Gwen” experienced her greatest joy throughout her days in providing friendship and guidance for her many nieces, nephews, their spouses and children and their grandchildren. The family bonds Gwen created leave behind both an indelible legacy of unconditional love and a model for putting family first.

Education: Gwen graduated from Marthaville High School in Sabine Parish, Louisiana at the age of 16 and set out for Houston, Texas.

Marriage: In Houston, Gwen met and married, Clyde Howard Hill, while Clyde was serving in the United States Army (1956). Gwen and Clyde settled in Humble, Texas in 1957 and raised two children, Lynn and Jesse. Gwen and Clyde divorced after 25 years of marriage. Gwen and Clyde remained close and maintained the bonds of family throughout Gwen’s life. Clyde, at the age of 84, survives Gwen.

Work: Gwen worked as a PBX operator for Bell Telephone Company and Ford Motors. Gwen’s entrepreneurial energy lead to her owning and operating a local tavern and rental properties. Gwen’s heart for charity lead her to organize benefits and celebrations for those in need. As Gwen’s health weakened, she influenced and inspired those near her to carry the torch for giving and serving those in need.

Survivors: Gwen is survived in death by daughter, L. Lynn Hill Brock Ford and husband, Wesley. Son, Jesse Howard Hill, and wife, Christina. Grandchildren, Matthew Benjamin Brock and wife, Nancy Marie Rogers Brock, Travis Wilson Brock, Samuel Howard Brock, Mahala Jane Happacher, Carson Raul Happacher, and Tucker Green Hill.

Friends: Gwen adored her friends and loved ones with all of her heart. Her fierce, unwavering love for people is her trademark and how she is best remembered. Where it says “people person” in the dictionary, Gwen’s picture is there.

Donations may be made in Gwen’s name to Cure Fest, benefiting M.D. Anderson Cancer Center, Houston, advancing the work for cancer prevention and treatment
