Obituary for Dorothy Lee Mixon (Fails)

Dorothy Lee Mixon (Fails)
Dorothy was born on November 17, 1924 in Monroeville, Alabama, to Ethel and L. E. Fails.

She is survived by her brother Calvin Fails and his wife Peggy Fails; her daughter Judy Hood and her husband Travis Hood; her daughter Janice Webb and her husband Buddy Webb; her son Kenneth Mixon and his wife Mary Mixon; her daughter-in-law Kay Mixon; her niece Cassie Lowery, nephews Benjamin Fails and Darrel Hernandez and great-nephew Cotten Lowery; her grandchildren Dalton Webb and his wife Darcy Webb, Chris Webb, William Mixon and his wife Tati Mixon, Christina Garcia and her husband Stephen Garcia, Constance Mixon and her husband Chris Roath, Sarah Hood and her husband Sam, and Jennifer Mixon; her great-grandchildren Mikhael Mixon, Noah Mixon, Aaliyah Hood, Alexis Doyle, Genevieve Webb, and Paisley Webb; and many, many friends and neighbors.

Dorothy is preceded in death by her husband Alex Neal Mixon, her parents Ethel and L. E. Fails, her sister Margie Hernandez and brother Otis Fails, her son Steven Mixon, and her grandson Michael Hood.

She was Dorothy to some, Ms. Mixon to others. Mama to her children and Momo to her grandchildren. She grew up in Monroe County, Alabama, and moved to Houston in the early 1950s with her husband and their children.

When widowed by a drunk driver, this strong single mother raised four children on her own in the 1950s and 60s in north Houston. She loved her children and all of her grandchildren and was a source of joy, sweetness, and unlimited kindness. Dorothy always had a song and a dance ready to entertain her children, then later in life, their children and their children’s children.

During World War II, she worked in the Mobile, Alabama shipyards and was a long-time employee at the Montgomery Ward candy and nut counter at Northline Mall in Houston. But her true passion was gardening. She had the green thumb to end all green thumbs, and she tended her garden with the same care and dedication she gave her family.

She was faithful to God and was always within arm’s reach of her Bible. No doubt she has already taken her place in heaven with our savior, Jesus Christ.

Her sweet demeanor and loving patience will be missed by all who knew her, but never forgotten.

Rosewood Funeral Home in Humble, Texas will be the site of her visitation on Sunday, November 18 from 2-5pm and her funeral service on Monday, November 19 at 10am.

Pallbearers include her grandchildren and sons-in-law.
