Obituary for James Dan Barnes

James Dan Barnes
James "Dan" Barnes was born February 8, 1944 in Athens, TX. He was
the youngest of 6 children born to Alfred Clifford Barnes and Juanita
Mae Lynch Barnes.

Dan graduated from Athens High School in 1962. He went on to obtain
his Associate of Arts from Henderson County Junior College before
earning his Bachelor of Science degree from Sam Houston State
University. In 1968, Dan began his career as a firefighter when he
joined the Houston Fire Department where he served his community for
the next 24 years and 8 months. Dan furthered his education while
with HFD earning Master Firefighter, Intermediate Instructor and
Aircraft Crash and Rescue Firefighter certifications through the Texas
Commission on Fire Protection, Heavy Rescue Technician through the
Houston Fire Department Training Division, and Hazardous Materials
Technician through the National Fire Academy. He held numerous
positions while with HFD, serving as a Hazardous Material Technician,
Crash Rescue Firefighter, Supervisor in the Safety Office/Photography
Division, was the Photography Supervisor, Heavy Rescue Technician,
Emergency Medical Technician and Firefighter. After retiring from
HFD, Dan went on to serve as the Safety/Loss Prevention Superintendent
between 1993 and 1995 for a private company in Saudi Arabia. He
retired from his overseas work, but then 3 years later ended up coming
out of retirement to serve as Fire Chief for the City of Athens
between 1998 and 2008. Between and during his firefighting career,
Dan pursued a host of other endeavors ranging from real estate and
investing to hot shot trucking and gold mining, as well as others. He
could never sit still for too long. He was always involved in
something or traveling somewhere for an adventure.

Despite his numerous career and academic accomplishments, it was the
year before his firefighting days began that Dan's most rewarding
milestone came - - when in 1967 he married the love of his life,
Conner Jean (Bennett) Barnes. They started dating in 1961 and spent
the next 53 years of their lives together before Conner left us all
too soon in 2014.

Dan and Conner celebrated the birth of their eldest daughter, Danna,
in 1974 followed by their youngest daughter, Dianna, in 1978. Dan,
Conner and their girls were a very tight family unit from the
beginning; a close, loving, supportive commitment to one another that
never faltered. The kind of bond that makes it no surprise that Danna
and Dianna were by their father's bedside every moment of every day
caring and advocating for him until the final moment when God allowed
him to be freed from his battle with cancer and took him home.

In 2003, Dan's daughter, Danna, married Mike Nansel followed by his
youngest daughter, Dianna, marrying Jason Glantz in 2007. He was
overjoyed to finally have the sons that he never had and felt very
blessed to have gained the families that came with that. Dan always
treated his son-in-laws like family of his own, especially as he
started to be blessed with "them beautiful grand babies."

Dan is survived by four grandchildren to carry on his legacy: Brianna
(age 14), Michael (age 11), Austin (age 8) and Addison (age 6);
step-grandchildren, Brent, Raina and Kiana; and step
great-grandchildren, Cayden, Lana, Vera, Adrianna and Lilianna. When
speaking of his grandchildren, Dan would often take a deep breath,
swell up with pride and with tears welling up in his eyes simply say,
"I sure do love them beautiful grand babies of mine."

Dan passed away on October 29, 2018 at the age of 74. The void he has
left in the hearts of his family and friends is deep. We will never
get over it, but we hope to get through it. James Dan Barnes, we
"love ya bunches and bunches!"
