BETTY JEAN SCOTT
January 28, 1933—July 6, 2018
Betty was born to Gabriel & Katherine Brooks in Houston, TX in the Heights. She attended Burbank Elementary and Junior High. She graduated from Jeff Davis High School. During her high school years she made the Honor Roll and was voted “Most Popular” and received numerous awards.
Betty’s first job was at Kress Dept. Store as a clerk. At the Cotton Exchange she put out the monthly paper and delivered it. Next she went to work at Stewart Title for a number of years. Her final job was at Harter Machinery Company. Betty started out there as a typist and file clerk. When she retired after 30 years she was an executive secretary.
Don and Betty met in June of 1952 at Cypress Glen Gun and Rifle Club. It was not love at first sight. Two weeks later they met again at Peppermint Park. It was love at second sight. They dated for two weeks when Don proposed to her. Of course Betty thought it was a joke. They continued to date with no mention of marriage until August of that year. Don and Betty were married November 7, 1952.
Don was drafted into the army in June of 1954. Betty was pregnant when he was sent to Korea. She was living with her parents when Donna Jean was born in 1955. Donna was named after both of her parents. Betty would show Donna pictures of Don during his deployment. Upon his return on May 13, 1956, Donna recognized him immediately.
After Don’s return from the service they bought their first house on Oklahoma Street. Everyone called it a doll house.
Their second child was born in 1958. They named him Randy Earl after Don’s dad. Before Randy’s second birthday, Don and Betty bought their second house on Homestead Road. They lived there approximately 9 years.
In the summer of 1969, Don and Betty moved to Spring, TX. They lived there 48 years until their house flooded during Hurricane Harvey.
Before moving to Spring, Don, Betty and family were very involved at Beneke UMC. After moving to Spring and deciding it was too far to drive, they started going to Spring Woods UMC. At that time Rev. Dewey Fuller was pastor and he married Donna & Rick, and Randy & Candi, as well as baptizing all three of their granddaughters. Don & Betty continue to be members today.
Betty was an Eastern Star for a number of years while Donna was in Rainbow Girls. She also served as president, secretary and Sunshine Reporter for the Fellowship Sunday School Class at Spring Woods UMC.
Betty is survived by her husband, Don; children, Donna (Rick) Davis and Randy (Candi) Scott; grandchildren Rhiannon Davis, Stephanie Roe and Ashley Glover and 10 great grandchildren.
