Obituary for John Marvin Quaid

John Marvin Quaid
John Marvin Quaid, 81, passed away June 1, 2017. A Louisiana native, he served in the Marine Corps before marrying Martha Hahn on January 22, 1961. John worked for Eastern Airlines for over 30 years.

John was born in Slidell, Louisiana. He graduated from Warren Easton High School in New Orleans before joining the Marine Corps. While stationed in Japan he shared many stories regarding cold weather training on Mt. Fuji. John married Martha in Louisiana and they started their life together in Boston, where he also had many stories involving cold weather. After these experiences, it was well known that John did not like cold weather. John and Martha relocated several times while John worked for Eastern Airlines. He ultimately resided with his family in Texas; they spent 7 years in Houston and 44 years in Huffman. After working for Eastern Airlines, John worked as a Correctional Officer for the Harris County Boot Camp until retirement. He also volunteered for many years with the Huffman Volunteer Fire Department.

He was an old fashioned man who put God first, family second, and country third. He loved reading theology, attending Sunday School, and volunteering with Saturday's Child. John was very involved in his children's lives as they grew up, including volunteering for little league coaching and umpiring. He was also very involved in his grandchildren's lives as he would travel to events including band concerts, drama performances, soccer games, and graduations. John was a master of the game of chess and enjoyed teaching anybody who wanted to learn how to play the game. He enjoyed fishing, playing Quiddler, listening to old country music, and reading. He loved to make tamales with Martha and he enjoyed eating oysters.

John enjoyed people and  was a friend to everybody he met. He was known for his laid back personality and often reminded others: "don't sweat the small stuff". John was also known to many as an epic story teller who had a great sense of humor. He had many stories to tell and people loved listening to him.

A family icon, known to many as "Bub", John is survived by his loving wife, Martha; their three children and spouses, Douglas and Diana Quaid, Robin and David Satterla, Christopher and Michele Quaid.  He is survived by his brothers, Duncan and Marvin Jr. He is also survived by seven grandchildren: Christina Quaid, Emily Satterla, John Satterla, Sebastian Quaid, Salvatore Quaid, Isabella Quaid, and Sophia Quaid. John  is survived by one great grandchild, Lydia Richardson, and many more family and friends too numerous to mention.

A Celebration of Life will be held at 5:00 pm, Friday, June 9, 2017 at Atascocita United Methodist Church, 19325 Pinehurst Trail Drive, Humble, TX 77346. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in John's memory to a charity of your choice or to Atascocita United Methodist Church.
