Attif Said Hallaway
Attif (Attie) Said Hallaway, September 3, 1931 - June 14, 2018. Attie was born in Beirut, Lebanon. When he was 3 years old, he and his mother came to the U. S. aboard the Queen Mary and landed on Ellis Island to join his father. They lived in Sioux City, Iowa and then settled in Seminole, Oklahoma in his 5th grade year. He attended the University of Oklahoma for a year before joining the Air Force. While stationed at Lackland Air Force Base in San Antonio, he met the love of his life, Lilly. They were married on August 16, 1953. After 4 years in the Air Force, he retired and started college at the University of Texas at Austin, majoring in Business Management. He worked in management for a college food service company until he landed a job with the FAA in flight service and was transferred to Houston. In 1970 his family was transferred to New Orleans and they lived in Slidell. After 6 years, it was time to go home to Texas and they were transferred to where it all began - San Antonio. Attie worked for the FAA for 20 years before retiring to fulfill his lifelong dream. In 1977, he opened the first Ace Hardware store in San Antonio. He and his wife worked tirelessly growing their business. In 2003, after 26 years in business, he retired and moved to Houston to be close to his daughter. A few years later, he decided he wanted to go back to work and started working at a new, local Ace Hardware. He worked there for 5 years. A week before Christmas in 2012, he suffered a major stroke that left him paralyzed on his right side, unable to swallow food and speak more than a few words. He was given 6-9 months to live, but survived 5 ½ years.
Attie was an Eagle Scout in the Boy Scouts. He was in the Civil Air Patrol and chosen to represent the State of Oklahoma at their annual banquet hosted by President Truman. He belonged to the Jaycee’s and then joined the Lion’s Club in San Antonio. He served as Treasurer, Vice President and President. In Houston, he served as Treasurer of the Kingwood Lion’s Club.
Attie loved to swim, bowl, play tennis, golf, work in the yard, camping, boating, John Wayne and Clint Eastwood movies. He could fix and build anything. He and Lilly loved to go out dancing and still went out to New Year’s Eve parties up until his stroke.
Attie loved his family most of all. He and Lilly were married for 64 years and raised a daughter together. We love you. We miss you. We will see you again.
Attie is preceded in death by his parents, Said and Rose (Ramza) Hallaway, brother, Roger Hallaway and son-in-law, Jon Stone.
He is survived by his wife of 64 years, Lilly Hallaway, daughter, Angela Stone, sister and brother-in-law, Jane and Mac Hickerson, granddaughter and husband, Stacey and Kyle Bundy, along with numerous nieces, nephews, great nieces and nephews.
