Obituary for Jean Gunn O'Berry (Gunn)

Our dearest Jean Gunn O’Berry of Huffman, Texas, died peacefully in her sleep at the age of 82 with family by her side on Sunday, May 21, 2017 at Hermann Memorial Hospital, Houston, Texas. Although not being in the best of health for many years, she still lived alone with little assistance and enjoyed the little things.

Jean Gunn O’Berry, born Jean Carmel Gunn, who made “Hello Dolly” famous in our hearts, was born into a family of pure class and musical talents in Norfolk, Virginia, July 15, 1934. Her parents, John Lindsey Gunn and Eileen Kirby Gunn, raised Jean and her six older siblings in the Catholic Church of Norfolk, Virginia, with hard work and traditions that have been passed down through generations. Married three times, she raised four boys and turned them into men with hearts of gold, tough as nails, and caring of others. Sing, oh could she sing and with her brothers, sisters, friends and a host of others, blew the roof off many a show from local venues to small living rooms bursting with fun and laughter. Working with the Naval Safety Center twice in her life, she truly enjoyed all she worked with and found true meaning in her work. Also a realtor, she enjoyed the freedom and the challenge. She was a dedicated worker when needed, and the best wife, mom and friend to so many over her nearly 83 years.

Preceded in death by her brothers Jack, Buddy and Paul, sisters Helen, Eileen, and Harriett, and son Mark Hoffman. She is survived by her sons David (Melanie) Connery, Matt (Dawn) Connery, Kelly (Jennie) Connery, daughter-in-law Becky Hoffman; grandchildren Monica Hamilton, C.J. Hoffman, Cody Hoffman, Travis Blackburn, Kelsey Blackburn, Morgan Connery, Kasey Thomas, Hanna Connery, Lindsey Connery, Tyler Connery, Paige Connery, Dane Connery, seven great-grandchildren, and too many relatives from her home and across the country to name, but she loved and admired you all.

A memorial service will be held this Friday, May 26, 2017, 2:00 pm at Rosewood Funeral Home, 2602 South Houston Ave., Humble, Texas, 77396. As she requested, her ashes will be spread in the beautiful Chesapeake Bay near her childhood home on Willoughby Spit, Norfolk, Virginia. A celebration of life will be held at 5:00 pm at the home of David and Melanie Connery following services May 26. Seek out family for location details.

The family would like to thank everyone who over the years was a friend to Jean, a caregiver when needed, who brought her groceries to her car, lifted her up in prayer and helped her smile when times
