Obituary for Irby Earl Slaughter

Irby Earl Slaughter
Another of The Greatest Generation has passed away. Reverend Irby Earl Slaughter left this life peacefully on January 26, 2015. He was born on April 22, 1924, to Chester B. and Jewel Slaughter in Humble, Texas, where he lived all of his life.
After graduation from Charles Bender High School in 1941, he volunteered in the United States Army where he served with honors and distinction earning the American Theater Campaign Medal, EAME Campaign medal with five Bronze stars. World War II Victory Medal, and Good conduct Medal. His tour of duty from 1943-1945 was with the 270th Field Artillery Battalion with the rank of Corporal. Specializing in communication or telephone equipment, he fought with General Paton in the Battle of the Buldge, Operation Overlord Utah Beach, and D-Day. After returning home December 7, 1945, he worked for Houston Light and Power Company and was a pastor of the Evangel Church for over 50 years. He was truly a “Service” man. God’s choice Service Servant, Service to Country, Service to Community, and Service to all mankind, never accepting payment for his work or duties. These were the most important and cherished elements of his life. His favorite hobbies were bow hunting and fishing. Irby was preceded in death by his parents and brothers Chester and Paxton.
He is survived by his loving wife Della, who through the years of illness gave him the best care possible and is a beacon of loyalty and love. Siblings June Glover, Jerry Slaughter , Marilyn Burney and a host of nieces and nephews. His last months were made exceptionally safe and peaceful by Sheron Smith who tirelessly gave around the clock care which he referred to as “God’s Work”. The family will always love Sheron.
The family will receive friends from 5:00pm-8:00pm Thursday January 29th, 2015 at Rosewood Funeral Home. Funeral Services will be Friday January 30th at 2:00pm at Rosewood Funeral Home.
In lieu of flowers the family requests donations be made to Grace Church, 7224 N Sam Houston Pkwy E
Humble, TX 77396 or to a charity of your choice.
