Obituary for Sue Bailey (Coburn)

Sue Bailey (Coburn)
SUE COBURN BAILEY

Sue Bailey of Houston, Texas, passed away on December 18, 2014 and is resting in the arms of her Lord and Savior Jesus Christ. She was born September 8, 1944 in Houston. She made a gallant fight against cancer before her passing. Sue was a loving mother, grandmother, and wife. She was married for 52 years to her high school sweetheart, Jerry Bailey, who she now leaves behind until they meet once more in God’s Kingdom. Sue is preceded in death by her mother Fannye Lee Coburn and her father Cecil Uriah Coburn, and her brother Doyle Coburn. She is survived by her husband Jerry, daughters Debra Goley of Goodyear, AZ , and Barbra Coffee of Henderson, NC. Her grandchildren were her greatest joy; duVal Goley, Jr., Bailey Goley, Austin Coffee, and Anna Coffee. She is also survived by her brothers Jarvis Coburn of Dallas, TX and Glenn Coburn of Lago Vista, TX, and numerous nieces and nephews and cousins.
Sue was a member of Hillcrest Methodist Church, where she first met Jerry. They attended Aldine High School in Houston. Her mother owned Lacey’s Flower Shop on US 59 at Aldine Mail Route. Sue was Jerry’s best friend and companion in their adventures over 5 decades across the world, working to support him as he became a chemical engineer from the University of Houston, then with Texaco in Port Arthur, TX and New York, NY, and then with Exxon in Aruba and the Middle East. As Jerry became President of Exxon in the Arabian Gulf, she dined with royalty and heads of state, but always with the grace and polish of a true Texas woman. She was always the wind beneath his wings, and made everyone in her presence feel inspired and important. He said his life was a success because of her.
Her accomplishments would fill volumes, but ever so humble, it was always about others. She was a skilled bowler of national accomplishments, and a repeated national and state writing award winner when she wrote a sports column for the Port Arthur News. She managed Hayes Realty in Port Arthur as a real estate broker. Along life’s path her church was foremost, from Hillcrest in Houston, to Aldersgate in Port Arthur TX, South Amboy NJ Methodist, to Bay City TX Methodist, to most recently Liberty Methodist in AZ, where she and Jerry often spent time. After returning to Texas in 1997, Sue opened Sue’s Quilt Shop in Bay City. She was a renowned quilter and teacher, and her numerous quilts will bring happiness to many folks around the world for years to come. At the same time she acquired an iconic home in Bay City and renovated it to receive a Texas Historical marker, as Bailey House, which she operated for 8 years as a bed and breakfast. It stands today as a visible monument to her legacy of community participation.
Sue enjoyed her travels and interface with church members and quilting friends everywhere. She led a Blue Bird girls group in Port Arthur, and most recently was leading a Girl Scouts group in Goodyear, AZ. She was a friend to all, a helper, a leader, and a listener, and an example of how a skilled businesswoman can balance her work and family and church and friends to be an inspiration to many. Her Godliness was evident when she spoke of her Lord as she often quoted Psalm 46:10; Be still and know that I am God. The world has lost a saint and Heaven has received her.
The family will host friends for visitation Monday evening from 4pm to 8pm at Rosewood Funeral Home. Funeral Services will Tuesday December 23, 2014 at 10AM also at Rosewood Funeral Home.
